Chickens

Elvis

Japanese Bantam Rooster

Elvis is a Japanese Bantam, which is a breed of miniature chicken. It is said that Bantams were first found in an Indonesian seaport. There are over 400 Bantam breeds and the Japanese bantam is one of the only True Bantam breeds, meaning that there are no large fowl counterparts. As its name suggest the Japanese Bantam is an Asiatic chicken breed, originating in Japan. Japanese bantams are used purely for ornamental purposes and is one of the most popular of all Bantam breeds. Elvis is Golden Nugget’s father.

Sex-linked Hens

The hen pictured above is one of six Sex-Linked breed hens that were found in the woods by a good Samaritan and brought to the sanctuary. Sex-links are crossbred chickens whose color at hatching is differentiated by sex, thus making chick sexing an easier process. Sex-links come in several varieties. Our Sex-linked hens currently do not have names and are available to name through our sponsorship program!

Salmon Faverolle Hen

The Salmon Faverolle was originally bred as utility poultry breed in France for winter eggs. Today the breed is rare and raised mostly for exhibition and novelty.

For the first time ever, one of our chickens has given birth to chicks! As the farm is a rescue sanctuary and not a breeding farm, we collect any eggs layed by our chickens, geese and ducks every morning. But this chicken was crafty and hid her eggs under one of the cat beds on Renee’s porch and a few days later, out popped five babies! This momma currently lives in the barn stall with the older/disabled birds while her babies grow. They follow her everywhere and snuggle so deep inside her feathers, you don’t even know they are there until a little yellow head pops out!

Australorp Hens

The Australorp was created in Australia by crossbreeding the Orpington, Leghorn, and Rhode Island Red. The purpose behind the creation of the Australorp was to create an egg laying powerhouse and the Australorp exceeded expectations. This breed is now famous for being able to lay over 300 eggs.

Serama Hen & Rooster

These are micro Seramas, a True Bantam breed originally from Malaysia and the smallest breed of chicken in the world. Our Seramas came from a 4-H supplier. People supply the 4-H classrooms with eggs to incubate for science projects. The problem is that there is often no place for them to go once the project is over. Our Seramas live with the bunnies and guinea pigs at the sanctuary.

Silkies

The Silkie is a breed of chicken named for its atypically fluffy plumage, which is said to feel like silk and satin. The breed has several other unusual qualities, such as black skin and bones, blue earlobes, and five toes on each foot, whereas most chickens only have four.

Our Silkies are all roosters and live in the bunny/guinea pig/pigeon pen. They are very friendly and love posing for pictures.
